Multiple Power Plants Shut Down After Quake

A recent earthquake caused significant disruptions across several power plants in Dhaka and other regions of Bangladesh, leading to widespread electricity outages. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) has assured the public that efforts are underway to restore the power supply as quickly as possible.

According to PDB officials, multiple facilities were affected by the seismic activity. The Bibiyana-2 (Summit) 341 MW plant, as well as the Ashuganj 55 MW and 50 MW plants, experienced complete shutdowns during the tremor. In addition, a 600 MW unit at SS Power, although operational, saw interruptions in its electricity supply.

Several other power plants also reduced their output partially, including Bibiyana-3, Ashuganj 225 MW, and Sirajganj 225 MW plants. Officials highlighted that disruptions at the Ghorashal AIS grid substation further exacerbated the outages. Damage such as fire, broken insulators, and other technical issues contributed to the prolonged power cuts in many areas.

The PDB has urged residents to remain patient while emergency teams work to restore full service. Engineers and technicians have been deployed across affected sites to repair equipment, assess structural damage, and ensure safety before resuming normal operations.

The recent outages underscore the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to natural disasters, particularly in densely populated urban centres such as Dhaka. Power disruptions not only affect households but also impact hospitals, industries, and essential services, highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness and resilient energy systems.

The following table summarises the impact on major power plants:

Power PlantCapacity (MW)Status During Earthquake
Bibiyana-2 (Summit)341Complete shutdown
Ashuganj55 & 50Complete shutdown
SS Power600Operational but supply interrupted
Bibiyana-3225Partial reduction in output
Ashuganj225Partial reduction in output
Sirajganj225Partial reduction in output
Ghorashal AIS Grid SubstationN/ASupply disrupted due to fire and broken insulators

PDB officials continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with regional power stations to resume normal operations safely. Residents are advised to report any ongoing electricity issues and remain alert to official updates.
