In a solemn yet significant gesture of international respect and remembrance, the remains of eighteen Japanese soldiers who perished during the Second World War have been exhumed in Chattogram and returned to Japan. The operation, overseen by the Chattogram War Cemetery, represents the latest chapter in decades-long efforts to honour fallen soldiers and facilitate cross-border collaboration in historical preservation.
Between 17 and 28 November, a ten-member expert team dispatched by the Japanese government conducted the painstaking excavation process. Working with precision and care, the team recovered the remains from locations believed to date back to the 1940s, handling each step with due reverence for the deceased.
The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) of Bangladesh reported that the Bangladesh Army, under the guidance of the caretaker government, provided comprehensive administrative and security support throughout the operation. The entire excavation was supervised by Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Kazi Sajjad Ali Zahir Bir Protik, a veteran of the Liberation War and an expert in archaeological and military exhumations, whose leadership ensured that the work met both historical and military standards.
On 28 November, following the successful recovery of the remains, a ceremonial guard of honour was held by a specially designated army unit, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion. Soon afterwards, the remains were formally transported to Japan, completing a mission that blends respect for history with contemporary international diplomacy.
This operation follows a similar initiative undertaken in 2024, when the remains of 23 Japanese soldiers were recovered from the Maynamati War Cemetery in Comilla and sent to Japan at the country’s request. Such efforts exemplify the enduring collaboration between Bangladesh and Japan in honouring the memory of those who lost their lives in wartime and ensuring that historical sites are preserved for future generations.
Officials have hailed the mission as a powerful demonstration of mutual respect and historical awareness, emphasising the importance of remembering the sacrifices of soldiers from across the world. Through these initiatives, Bangladesh continues to play an active role in maintaining historical memory while fostering strong ties with the international community.
