Rishad Hossain has become one of the most discussed names in Bangladesh cricket, with his performances drawing consistent attention both domestically and internationally. Among those to praise the young leg-spinner is New Zealand’s experienced all-format leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who expressed admiration for Rishad ahead of the T20 international series.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Bir Sreshtho Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram, Sodhi highlighted Rishad’s versatility and effectiveness, particularly referencing his performances in Australia’s Big Bash League. He noted that Rishad’s showing in the tournament demonstrated his capability as a multi-dimensional spin bowler.
Sodhi remarked that Rishad’s bowling style distinguishes him from many conventional Asian leg-spinners. He explained that while Asian leg-spinners often rely on flatter trajectories due to their release angles, Rishad operates in a more traditional manner, extracting bounce and using his height—reported at 6 feet 2 inches—to his advantage. According to Sodhi, such a profile has been uncommon in the region’s cricket for a considerable period.
Rishad, who made his international debut in 2023, made an immediate impact in his first year at the top level. In the Big Bash League, he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker among spinners with 15 wickets, further underlining his growing reputation. At international level, however, he has so far featured only in One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. Despite playing in first-class cricket domestically, he has yet to make his Test debut.
Sodhi, who has represented New Zealand across all three formats for over a decade, also revealed that he maintains contact with Rishad through Instagram, and that they have exchanged conversations during the Bangladesh–New Zealand ODI series. He further expressed his interest in seeing Rishad progress into Test cricket, emphasising the value of leg-spin in the longest format.
He stated that Rishad’s future appears promising and that his skill set could make him suitable for Test cricket, where leg-spin has become comparatively rare in modern times.
Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed, a former Pakistan leg-spinner, also provided insight into Rishad’s ongoing development. He explained that the coaching staff are working on expanding Rishad’s variations, particularly his use of the crease and improvement of his googly. Mushtaq noted that further refinement is required in his googly and in adjusting his angles against right-handed batters, including changes in line, proximity to the stumps, and wider variations.
Mushtaq further clarified that Rishad’s absence from the final ODI of the recent series was not due to exclusion but part of a developmental approach aimed at strengthening the team’s overall spin resources and providing match exposure to other bowlers.
