Two Bangladeshi men are reported to have been beaten to death by personnel of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near the Shibganj Upazila border in Chapainawabganj district. The alleged incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, 30 November, at approximately 2:00 am, between international boundary pillars 76 and 77. Authorities from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have stated that they are not yet aware of the full details.
The deceased have been identified as Ibrahim Rinku, aged 28, son of the late Mojibur Rahman of Gaipara village, Durlovpur Union, Shibganj, and Momin Mia, aged 29, son of Aminul Islam of Shyampur village, Paka Union.
According to reports, a group of four to five individuals had crossed near Wahedpur Border Outpost (BOP) to retrieve cattle. While most of the group reportedly managed to return safely, Momin Mia and Ibrahim Rinku were allegedly apprehended by members of the Nimtita BSF camp. Subsequent accounts indicate that the two men were severely beaten and later thrown into the Padma River.
Local sources provided further insight into the incident. Rafik Uddin, a ward member of Paka Union, Ward No. 7, stated that he had heard in the local market that two men had gone missing while attempting to bring cattle from across the border. Although locals suggested that the men had been killed, their families have so far refrained from filing complaints, reportedly out of fear.
Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mostafizur Rahman, commander of the 53rd BGB Battalion, confirmed that the matter had come to his attention through informal sources. He added that attempts to contact the BSF resulted in a denial of the allegations, and no official complaint has yet been lodged with the BGB by the families.
