For Enzo Fernández, the journey with Argentina has been nothing short of meteoric. Making his debut on the international stage, he achieved the ultimate accolade for a footballer: winning the FIFA World Cup. In Qatar 2022, the young midfielder not only helped the Albiceleste lift the trophy but also earned recognition as the tournament’s Best Young Player, signalling the arrival of a new generation of Argentine talent.
Following his World Cup heroics, Fernández continued to cement his status by contributing to Argentina’s Copa América 2024 victory. For many players, this accumulation of international honours might represent the apex of their career. However, Fernández has a vision that extends beyond the medals and accolades—he aspires to captain his nation.
In an exclusive interview with GiveMeSport, Fernández spoke candidly about this ambition. “I certainly dream of captaining Argentina, but it’s not my decision. That’s for the coaching staff. Wearing the captain’s armband for my country would be an enormous honour. I don’t know when it will happen, but if it does, it will be a defining moment for me,” he said.
At present, Lionel Messi holds the captaincy and is expected to continue leading the national team, including at the 2026 World Cup. Nevertheless, Messi’s eventual retirement from international football could pave the way for Fernández to realise his dream.
Reflecting on the Qatar triumph, Fernández emphasised the emotional significance of winning alongside Messi. “Winning the World Cup with Lionel was incredible. We grew up watching him on television, and to share in the moment that completed his career ambitions was special. We wanted to win it for him; that was our motivation,” he recalled.
When asked about Argentina’s chances of winning back-to-back World Cups in 2026, Fernández remained cautiously optimistic. “History has shown it’s difficult, as only Italy and Brazil have done it before. We are focused on what’s ahead. If it’s Messi’s last tournament, we will do everything to defend the trophy,” he said.
Fernández’s story is one of rapid ascent and ambition. Having conquered the World Cup and continental competition, his sights are now firmly set on leadership and continuing Argentina’s proud footballing legacy.
