Bangladesh is expected to experience several spells of cold weather over the next three months, with at least three episodes potentially developing into severe cold waves. In addition, there is a possibility of hailstorms and thunderstorms in certain areas during this period, according to the Meteorological Department.
The long-term forecast, covering December through February, indicates that between three and eight mild to moderate cold waves may sweep across various regions of the country. Mild cold waves are expected to bring temperatures down to 8–10°C, while moderate cold waves could see the mercury drop to 6–8°C. Some of these events may intensify further, causing temperatures to fall as low as 4–6°C in the affected areas.
Dense to moderate fog is also likely to form over river basins and adjacent regions, particularly from late night until morning. In other parts of the country, light to moderate fog may appear and, in some instances, persist until the afternoon. The Meteorological Department noted that dense fog can reduce the temperature difference between day and night, making the cold feel more biting than the actual thermometer reading.
Towards the end of February, isolated locations may also experience brief hailstorms accompanied by thunderstorms. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly when travelling, as icy roads and sudden storms may pose hazards.
