How Haaland Almost Chose Golf Over Football

Erling Haaland, the Norwegian striker currently terrorising defences at Manchester City, may not have been destined solely for football greatness. In fact, football could easily have been a sideline in his remarkable athletic career. Before the world knew him as a “goal machine,” Haaland was a multi-talented young athlete with the potential to excel in golf, track and field, handball, and tennis.

Haaland’s father, former professional footballer Alf-Inge Haaland, encouraged a diverse sporting upbringing. The young Erling displayed extraordinary athleticism from a very early age, standing out in track and field due to his height and natural coordination. At just five years old, he achieved a remarkable feat in standing long jump, leaping 1.63 metres and breaking a world record for his age group. Such accomplishments hinted at a promising career in athletics, but his father had other plans.

Speaking to Manchester City’s official website, Alf-Inge shared, “The handball manager in Norway wanted him to play handball. I felt tennis and handball nearby were also excellent options.” He stressed the importance of being versatile, stating that developing different physical skills would positively influence whichever sport his son eventually pursued.

However, golf became a major focus of his father’s vision. Alf-Inge’s greatest dream was to see Erling become a professional golfer, and he pushed his son toward the sport. Haaland recounted on The Rest Is Football podcast, “It’s funny because my father’s biggest dream was for me to become a professional golfer. That was his ultimate ambition.” Between the ages of 10 and 13, Haaland played golf every week, honing his swing under his father’s watchful eye.

Haaland’s upbringing was strict, particularly in sport. He explained humorously, “You will never see me play with gloves. My father would have beaten me if I had worn them.” Despite the early golf lessons, football eventually won Haaland’s heart, and the world is fortunate for that choice.

Now 25, Haaland has become one of football’s brightest stars. His record-breaking feats at Manchester City include the fastest 100 goals in Premier League history, as well as the quickest 10, 25, and 50-goal milestones. This season, he has netted 23 goals and provided seven assists in 25 appearances across all competitions. Haaland’s footballing success has undoubtedly eclipsed any dream of a golfing career, proving that while versatility is valuable, following one’s passion can lead to extraordinary achievements.

Haaland’s story is a fascinating glimpse into what might have been. From golf courses and handball courts to football stadiums filled with cheering fans, his journey is a testament to talent, determination, and the unpredictable paths of athletic greatness.
