Chelsea’s teenage winger Estevao Willian will miss the Premier League visit to Newcastle United after picking up a minor muscle problem, manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed. The 18-year-old was notably absent as Chelsea progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over League One side Cardiff City, raising questions about his availability for upcoming matches.
Maresca addressed the situation after the cup victory, noting: “It’s a small muscle problem. He won’t be available for Newcastle. We will see for the next one.” While the injury is not deemed severe, the decision to rest Estevao underscores the club’s careful management of young talent amid a congested fixture list.
Chelsea face a demanding schedule in the coming weeks, starting with a trip to St James’ Park, followed by home fixtures against Aston Villa and Bournemouth before the end of December. Maresca acknowledged that discontent is a natural part of football, saying: “Any supporters in the world, when you don’t win, they are not happy. So in some moments, when we didn’t win games, they have not been happy – but that’s normal. Overall, the fans have always been there.”
