Indonesian Pacer Sets World Record with Five Wickets in One Over

International T20 cricket witnessed a moment of pure astonishment as Indonesian fast bowler Gede Priandana etched his name into the record books with an achievement never before seen at international level. In a remarkable performance against Cambodia, Priandana claimed five wickets in a single over, setting a new world record across both men’s and women’s international cricket.

The historic feat took place on Tuesday, 23 December, during the opening match of the series in Bali. Chasing a competitive target of 168 runs, Cambodia appeared to be fighting back steadily. After 15 overs, they had reached 106 for 5, with hopes still alive of pushing Indonesia deep into the contest.

What followed in the 16th over, however, completely altered the course of the match. Priandana was handed the ball and produced a spell that will be remembered for years to come. He dismissed three batters with the first three deliveries, completing a sensational hat-trick. Rather than easing off, the Indonesian pacer maintained relentless accuracy and pace, removing two more batters with the next two balls. The over concluded with Priandana conceding just one run while dismantling the Cambodian batting line-up.

This extraordinary burst of bowling sealed Indonesia’s dominance, with the hosts eventually claiming victory by 60 runs. The stadium erupted as teammates surrounded Priandana, fully aware that they had just witnessed a once-in-a-generation moment in the sport.

Before his heroics with the ball, Priandana had already contributed with the bat. Opening the innings, he scored 6 runs from 11 deliveries, playing a supporting role at the top of the order. The cornerstone of Indonesia’s batting effort, however, was wicketkeeper-batter Dharma Kusuma, whose sublime unbeaten 110 from 68 balls provided the foundation for the imposing total.

While this was the first instance of five wickets being taken in a single over in international cricket, the feat has occurred twice before in recognised domestic T20 competitions. Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain achieved it during the 2013–14 season, followed by India’s Abhimanyu Mithun in the 2019–20 campaign. Neither, however, matched the global significance of Priandana’s accomplishment on the international stage.

Previously, the benchmark in international T20 cricket stood at four wickets in an over—an occurrence recorded 14 times. The most iconic of those came in 2019, when Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga claimed four wickets in four consecutive balls against New Zealand.

Priandana’s performance not only elevates Indonesian cricket but also serves as a reminder of the sport’s expanding global footprint, where historic moments can emerge from any corner of the cricketing world.
