Former BNP MP Shahin Resigns from Party Following Nomination Setback

Moymonsingh-8 (Ishwarganj) constituency’s former BNP parliamentarian, Shah Nurul Kabir Shahin, has officially resigned from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party after being denied a party nomination. The announcement came during a press conference held at the Ishwarganj Press Club on Sunday, 28 December, at midday, where Shahin declared his departure from all party activities.

Addressing the media, Shahin reflected on his long political journey, stating, “I entered politics as an elected representative of Fazlul Haque Hall during my student days at Dhaka University. For the past 43 years, I have been actively involved in BNP politics. Over the years, I have participated in numerous television talk shows and media discussions on behalf of the party, often in highly challenging circumstances. During the tenure of the Awami League government, I faced arrests and political persecution while organising rallies, meetings, and demonstrations on the streets.”

Shahin’s parliamentary career includes being elected as a BNP MP in 2001. He noted that although he received the party nomination again in 2006, elections were not held, and in 2014, the party chose not to participate in the election. In 2018, he was initially nominated by the party but was ultimately denied candidacy due to coalition arrangements.

He added, “Despite these setbacks, I have tirelessly organised party activists and continued to participate in all BNP activities. I had hoped the party would acknowledge my dedication by granting me a nomination for the forthcoming 11th National Parliamentary Election. Regrettably, despite numerous nomination reshuffles up until 28 December, I was overlooked. Consequently, I am resigning from all party posts and activities. My resignation letter has been formally sent to the Acting Chairman of the party by post.”

When asked about future plans, Shahin responded, “Several parties have approached me to consider nominations. While I have not yet decided whether to contest under another party’s banner, I am determined to participate in the election as an independent candidate, leveraging my strong support base on the ground.”

Shahin’s resignation has sparked discussion both locally and nationally, as it highlights ongoing debates over party nomination processes and political recognition. After more than four decades in politics, his departure marks the end of a significant chapter in BNP’s local and national operations, with potential implications for future election strategies in the Ishwarganj constituency.
