A two-year-old child, Muslima Islam, has been left entirely without parental care following the death of her father, Hannan Sheikh, 45, who was lynched by a mob on the night of Friday, 1 May. The fatal incident took place in the Bilnalia Bazar area of the Talma Union, located within the Nagarkanda Upazila of Faridpur. This tragedy marks the second significant abandonment for the toddler, whose mother, Arifa Begum, reportedly divorced Hannan Sheikh and left the family just 21 days after the child’s birth.
The victim, a resident of Satoir village, was the son of Shahid Sheikh. Following his wife’s departure two years prior, Hannan Sheikh had served as the sole provider for his young daughter and his elderly parents. The child is currently in the care of her paternal grandparents, who have expressed profound anxiety regarding her future welfare and their own limited capacity to support her in their twilight years.
The Incident: Misinformation and Extrajudicial Killing
According to police statements and eyewitness accounts, the encounter began at approximately 10:00 pm on Friday. A truck driven by Hannan Sheikh was reportedly involved in a road traffic accident involving pedestrians in the Bilnalia area. Almost immediately, a catastrophic rumour was disseminated across the locality and via social media platforms, falsely claiming that the vehicle had “crushed 20 people.”
As this misinformation spread, local tension culminated in a roadblock. Residents intercepted the vehicle at the New Hatkhola area of Bilnalia Bazar and forcibly removed the driver and his two assistants. Hannan Sheikh was subjected to a sustained and violent physical assault by the assembled crowd. His assistants, identified as Naim, 22, and Al-Amin, 25, also sustained injuries during the attack.
Hannan Sheikh was subsequently transported to Faridpur Medical College Hospital in a critical state. Upon arrival, medical personnel pronounced him dead. The two assistants remain under hospital care. Subsequent police enquiries have confirmed that the scale of the initial accident was significantly exaggerated by the rumours that incited the vigilante violence.
Domestic Devastation and Financial Instability
The Satoir village residence remains a scene of intense mourning. Family members observed that the two-year-old, unable to comprehend the finality of her father’s death, has been alternating between bouts of confusion and distress. Her grandmother, Nargis Begum, noted that the child was reliant on her father for essential provisions, including milk and basic necessities.
The victim’s father, Shahid Sheikh, spoke of the utter collapse of the family’s economic security. “My son was the only earning member of this family,” he said. “If an offence had occurred, he should have been dealt with by the law. Instead, he was murdered because of a rumour. I am filled with dread regarding who will provide for this child now.”
The grandparents, both of advanced age, expressed deep-seated fears that their passing would leave Muslima without any legal or financial guardians, as they no longer have a primary provider to secure her upbringing.
Police Inquiry and Judicial Steps
Following a post-mortem examination, the body of Hannan Sheikh was returned to his family. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nagarkanda Police Station, Golam Rasul Samdani Azad, confirmed that the authorities have advised the family to initiate a formal murder case. The family intends to pursue legal action once the funeral rites have concluded.
Law enforcement agencies are actively gathering evidence to identify the perpetrators of the lynching and the originators of the false digital content that provoked the mob. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Nagarkanda Circle), Mahmudul Hasan, detailed the investigative priorities:
Analysis of Digital Footprint: Officers are reviewing social media posts and video footage to identify those who amplified the inflammatory rumours.
Forensic Identification: CCTV footage and witness testimonies from Bilnalia Bazar are being examined to identify the primary instigators of the physical assault.
Accountability: Authorities have stated that once the case is registered, they will take robust legal measures against all parties involved in the extrajudicial killing.
This incident has once again highlighted the lethal dangers of social media misinformation and the recurring issue of mob justice in regional districts, with a vulnerable two-year-old child bearing the ultimate domestic cost of the disorder.
