Toddler Shields Disabled Brother After Roadside Abandonment

In a poignant display of sibling devotion amidst a harrowing act of neglect, a four-year-old girl was discovered huddling over her disabled younger brother to protect him from the freezing night air in Chattogram’s Anwara Upazila. The two children were abandoned on a desolate roadside on Sunday evening, 28 December, during a period of severe winter weather. The sight of the young girl, Aisha, desperately clutching her two-year-old brother to keep him warm moved local witnesses to tears, highlighting a tragic case of parental desertion.

The siblings were rescued by Mohim Uddin, an auto-rickshaw driver, who spotted them shivering near the Mazar Gate area of Barkhain Union. Noticing that no adults were nearby as darkness fell, Mohim took the children to his own home to ensure their safety. His wife, Sharmin Akter, reported that both children were in poor health upon arrival, noting that the younger boy lives with physical disabilities. The couple believes the children’s medical complexities and the family’s potential inability to cope with their healthcare needs may have led to this desperate abandonment.

Aisha was able to provide authorities with the names of her parents, Khorshed Alam and Jhinuk Akhtar, and indicated that their home is located in the Satkania Upazila. In a statement that adds a layer of mystery to the tragedy, the four-year-old explained that a woman she identified as an “aunt” had taken them from their parents and instructed them to wait by the road before she vanished. The children were reportedly in a state of shock but began to recover slightly after receiving warm clothes and a hot meal from their rescuers.
