Nigar Sultana Sanctioned for Code Breach

Bangladesh women’s cricket captain Nigar Sultana Joty has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Code of Conduct during the third and final Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka. She was formally sanctioned for a Level 1 offence and has been issued one demerit point.

The incident occurred on 2 May at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium during the third T20I of the series. Following her dismissal in Bangladesh’s innings, Nigar Sultana expressed dissatisfaction with the umpire’s decision. As she left the field, she threw her bat to the ground in frustration. The ICC classified this action as misuse of cricket equipment under its disciplinary regulations.

The sanction was imposed after match officials reported the incident. According to the ICC, the charge was upheld as a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct. Nigar Sultana accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, Supriya Rani Das, and therefore no formal hearing was required.

It was also confirmed that this was her first disciplinary offence within the preceding 24-month period. The match officials involved in reporting the incident were as follows:

Under ICC regulations, a Level 1 offence typically covers misconduct such as dissent at an umpire’s decision, inappropriate use of equipment, or other minor breaches of the Code of Conduct. Sanctions for such offences may include an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and the addition of one or two demerit points, depending on the severity of the incident.

In this case, only a reprimand and one demerit point were imposed. As the player accepted the sanction, the disciplinary process was concluded without the need for a hearing.

The incident took place during a series in which Bangladesh suffered a 3–0 defeat to Sri Lanka in the T20I matches. The disciplinary action against the captain was confirmed shortly after the conclusion of the series.
