The avant-garde rock outfit Shonar Bangla Circus has made a thunderous return to the music scene with the release of their second studio project, ‘Mahashashan’ (The Great Crematorium). This expansive double album, consisting of 17 tracks, represents one of the most ambitious conceptual undertakings in the history of the modern Bangladeshi alternative scene.
A Tale of Resurrection and Vengeance
Following their 2020 debut Hyena Express, which gained a cult following for its haunting lyrics and psychedelic arrangements, the band has doubled down on their narrative-driven songwriting. The new album is divided into two volumes: Mahashashan-1, featuring nine tracks, and Mahashashan-2, containing the final eight.
The album serves as a direct sequel to their previous work. Lead vocalist and lyricist Probar Ripon described the project as a “rebirth.” He noted that the protagonist of their first album, who symbolically died in the track ‘Epitaph,’ is resurrected in this record under the name Droho (meaning ‘Rebellion’).
“Droho declares war against humanity,” Ripon stated. “It is a saga of vengeance against mankind. To truly understand the evolution of this character and the weight of his anger, the listener must commit to the full one hour and 52 minutes of the album in a single sitting.”

Upcoming Tour: ‘The Journey of Mahashashan’
Fans eager to experience the new material in a live setting will not have to wait long. The band has announced a nationwide solo concert tour titled “Mahashashan-er Jatra”, set to commence in approximately two months. Much like their previous “Hyena Express Experience” tour—which saw them perform in seven divisional cities—this new tour will feature the 17-track album performed in its entirety for the first time.
The current lineup—Probar Ripon, Shwet Panduranga Blumberg, Shakil Haq, and Saad Chowdhury—continues to push the boundaries of the Bangladeshi “Band Music” tradition, blending philosophical depth with sophisticated musicality.
