NHAs Welcome New Medicine Pricing Policy

The National Health Alliance (NHA) has welcomed the government’s recent approval of a structured pricing mechanism and essential medicines list, describing it as a significant step towards making healthcare more affordable and accessible for all citizens. The decision, taken during the latest advisory council meeting, includes 295 essential medicines to be sold at regulated prices, ensuring that critical drugs remain within reach for the general population.

In a joint statement on Friday, 9 January, Professor Shadrul Islam, NHA convenor, and Dr. Abdul Ahad, member secretary, applauded the move, emphasising its potential to reduce healthcare costs, particularly for low- and middle-income families. They noted that the adoption of a modern, evidence-based pricing policy will allow citizens to obtain safe, effective, and quality medicines without excessive financial burden.

“Access to effective medicines at the right price is a fundamental right,” the statement read. “Transparent pricing mechanisms ensure that this right is safeguarded, while promoting fairness and accountability across the pharmaceutical sector.”

The NHA also extended special thanks to Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum and Assistant to the Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Sayedur Rahman, for their pivotal roles in implementing the policy. The alliance highlighted that the initiative would strengthen regulatory oversight, enhance market transparency, and foster public trust in the healthcare system.

According to NHA officials, the policy will deliver multiple benefits:

  • Ensure fair pricing of essential medicines

  • Control unreasonable price hikes in the pharmaceutical market

  • Reduce household medical expenses

  • Increase adherence to prescribed treatments, boosting overall public health outcomes

The alliance expressed confidence that, with coordinated efforts from the government, regulatory authorities, medical professionals, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and other stakeholders, the policy could be effectively enforced, building a people-centric, equitable, and sustainable healthcare system.
