In Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj area, notorious fugitive Sohag, 34, has finally been arrested following a public shootout linked to a violent turf war over the cotton business in Adamjee EPZ. After evading capture for nearly ten months, Sohag was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 January, by a joint law enforcement operation in the Kadamtoli neighbourhood, along with two of his accomplices, Abdul Jalil (32) and Md. Parvez (25).
Sohag is a resident of various localities within Siddhirganj and is also known as the maternal cousin of Rakibur Rahman Sagor, former president of the Narayanganj Metropolitan Chhatra Dal.
According to police sources, in March last year, Sohag was seen publicly firing a pistol during a violent clash at the Universal Garments factory in Adamjee EPZ, over the control and dominance of the cotton supply business. The confrontation resulted in at least eight individuals being injured, several motorcycles damaged, and arson committed. Video footage of the incident quickly circulated on social media, turning Sohag into a wanted figure and forcing him into hiding for an extended period.
Siddhirganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Abdul Barik, stated:
“Acting on a tip-off, our team conducted a raid in Kadamtoli at dawn, successfully arresting Sohag along with his two associates. They were found under the influence of narcotics at the time. No firearms were recovered; however, a body search led to the seizure of 120 yaba tablets.”
The OIC further confirmed that Sohag has multiple prior cases related to narcotics and other criminal offences. His accomplices, Jalil and Parvez, are also facing pending trials for drug and related crimes. Sohag has denied any involvement with firearms, but police intend to file a remand application with the court and pursue arms charges should weapons be recovered.
Eyewitnesses described Sohag’s behaviour during the March incident as “terror-inducing,” a fact corroborated by the viral video evidence. Despite nearly a year in hiding, authorities successfully executed the coordinated operation to bring him to justice.
