A woman murdered in Manikganj over debt collection.

In a shocking incident in Manikganj Sadar Upazila, a 55-year-old woman, Nurjahan Begum, was allegedly murdered by strangulation over a dispute regarding outstanding payments. The accused, Mosharraf Hossain, 45, has been formally charged and apprehended by the District Detective Branch (DB) today, Tuesday.

Police Superintendent Mohammad Sarwar Alam confirmed the arrest during a press briefing at his office, providing details of the case and the investigation.

Mosharraf, a resident of Pauli village in Sadar Upazila and the son of Shafiuddin, works as a rod worker in the construction sector. The deceased, Nurjahan Begum, was the widow of the late Abul Khayer. Her only daughter, Kajol Akter, lives in Dhaka’s Dhamrai with her husband following her marriage, leaving Nurjahan to live alone. Nurjahan ran a small tea stall beside her home to support herself.

According to police reports, local sources, and the FIR, the incident came to light when Kajol attempted to contact her mother by phone last Sunday but received no response. Concerned neighbours informed Kajol that the door of her mother’s house was locked from the outside. Later that night, at approximately 11:30 pm, Kajol reached her mother’s home and forcibly entered, only to find Nurjahan’s body lying on the floor. Authorities were immediately notified, and police recovered the body and sent it to Manikganj Medical College for autopsy.

This morning, Kajol filed a murder case at Sadar Police Station against Mosharraf. Following the complaint, a DB team arrested the suspect from South Shaljana, Shibaloy Upazila, earlier today.

According to the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Masud Munsi of Sadar Police Station, Mosharraf has since given a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. He reportedly admitted that he had been living in Nurjahan’s house as a tenant and had been pressured by her over unpaid rent and pending payments for the tea stall. In addition, personal disputes stemming from his wife leaving him had fueled his anger, culminating in a confrontation in which he allegedly strangled Nurjahan with her own scarf. The court has since remanded the accused to custody for further proceedings.
