A fourth-grade student was seriously injured on Thursday morning in Narail’s Kalia Upazila after an improvised explosive device detonated in a garden. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in the Chhoto Kalia area, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The injured child, Alif Molla, is the son of a migrant worker, Rachu Molla, from Jaynagar village in Naragati Upazila. Alif is currently a student at Chhoto Kalia Government Primary School and lives with his family in rented accommodation within the area.
Local residents reported that the explosion occurred after a suspicious bag was left outside the residence of a neighbour, Ranu Begum. Concerned for safety, neighbours moved the bag into a nearby garden. Driven by curiosity, Alif approached the bag. Upon examining its contents, which resembled a crude explosive device, he picked it up. Feeling it heat up, he attempted to throw it away, triggering a sudden and violent explosion.
Alif sustained serious injuries and was initially admitted to Kalia Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment. His mother, Sathi Begum, described the incident as “a frightening experience” and urged authorities to ensure the safety of children in the neighbourhood.
Md. Idris Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Kalia Police Station, confirmed that authorities had visited the site following the incident. “Fragments of the bomb-like object have been recovered for forensic examination. Detailed information regarding the device and its origin will be available after analysis,” he stated.
Safety experts emphasise that unattended explosive devices pose an extreme risk, particularly to children. They have called for heightened vigilance, community awareness programmes, and stricter monitoring to prevent similar incidents.
