Son Accused of Killing Father Over Room Dispute

A domestic dispute over occupying a preferred room has allegedly led to the killing of a 70-year-old man in Juri upazila of Moulvibazar, Bangladesh, with police accusing his son of carrying out the fatal attack.

The victim, Sultan Ali, was reportedly struck on the head with a wood-cutting axe by his youngest son, Foyaz Mia, 27, who had recently returned home from Saudi Arabia on a short leave. According to the police and statements from relatives cited in the case, the incident occurred on the night of 26 June at the family residence in Ministergaon village under Goyalbari Union.

Family members say the argument began over which room Foyaz would occupy during his stay at home. Tensions escalated quickly. In a moment of anger, he allegedly used a sharp axe commonly kept for household and agricultural work, striking his father on the back of the head. The blow left Sultan Ali critically injured.

He was rushed towards Kulaura Upazila Health Complex, but died on the way before receiving proper medical treatment.

Sultan Ali, a long-time resident of the village, had been living with his family after the death of his wife around five years ago. He had six sons and two daughters, with three of his sons already living separately in different homes. Foyaz, the youngest, had been working abroad in Saudi Arabia for several years before returning home on a two-month leave beginning 24 June.

Following the incident, relatives allege that Foyaz fled the hospital premises without informing anyone while preparations were underway to bring the body back home. His mobile phone has remained switched off since then.

Police later recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination. A murder case was subsequently filed on Saturday night by the victim’s eldest son, Sahid Mia, naming Foyaz as the accused.

Confirming the case, the Officer-in-Charge of Juri Police Station, Rafiqul Islam, said initial examination of the body revealed a deep injury to the back of the victim’s head, consistent with a sharp weapon attack. He added that the suspect remains absconding and efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him.

The incident has left the local community shocked, with neighbours describing the family as previously শান্ত and untroubled, making the violent turn of events all the more distressing.
