Security Bolstered as National Election Campaigning Commences

As the 13th National Parliamentary Election enters its most active phase, official campaigning is set to begin tomorrow, Thursday. The country is bracing for a surge in political activity as candidates prepare to launch rallies, conduct door-to-door canvassing, and mobilise supporters. To counter the inherent risks of such a high-stakes period, Bangladesh’s law enforcement agencies have announced a comprehensive strategy focused on “visible policing” and public reassurance.

Maintaining Order Amidst Political Fervour

Senior officials have identified the prevention of inter-party skirmishes and the containment of misinformation as their primary operational challenges. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Baharul Alam, underscored that the force is not merely reacting to events but is proactively working to build public confidence.

“We are prioritising the enhancement of a sense of security among the citizens,” IGP Alam stated on Wednesday night. “While the workload for the police will naturally intensify, our vigilance must be heightened to prevent confrontations. Our presence on the ground will be significantly more visible through increased patrols and strategic deployments.”

Technological Oversight and Specialised Training

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and various intelligence wings have finalised their preparations to maintain stability. RAB Director General A.K.M. Shahidur Rahman confirmed that specialised cyber teams are working around the clock to detect and neutralise “fake news” and provocative digital content that could incite communal or political violence.

Furthermore, the police are integrating modern tools into their daily operations. For the first time on this scale, drones will be used to monitor crowd density and movement at major rallies, while officers in volatile areas will be equipped with body-worn cameras to record interactions and prevent the abuse of power.

Neutralising Potential Threats

Law enforcement is particularly focused on several high-risk factors that could influence the polls:

  • Fugitive Tracking: Intensified surveillance of hardened criminals who escaped during previous jailbreaks.

  • Weapon Recovery: Continuous operations to recover firearms looted from police stations during past civil unrest.

  • Preventative Detention: Identifying and monitoring “threat actors” or professional muscle-men often hired to intimidate voters.

RAB DG Shahidur Rahman also issued a stern warning regarding attacks on law enforcement, referencing a recent incident in Sitakunda. He stated that joint operations are underway to apprehend every individual involved in such assaults, ensuring that no one can obstruct the democratic process with impunity.

As the candidates hit the streets tomorrow, the overarching goal of the administration is to ensure that the “fear factor” is removed from the electoral process, allowing the general public to engage with the democratic transition in a peaceful and secure environment.
