In a shocking turn of events in Cox’s Bazar, the wife of the late Jasim Uddin, who had filed a murder complaint immediately after her husband’s death, has now been arrested as the primary suspect. The case, which initially garnered widespread sympathy and local attention, has taken a dramatic twist following months of police investigation.
On Friday, 23 January, at around 6:30 pm, Selina Akter was apprehended from the PT School area of Cox’s Bazar town. According to police sources, the investigation revealed that the initial complaint was orchestrated to conceal an extramarital relationship.
Authorities reported that Jasim Uddin was brutally murdered on the night of 10 August last year at his residence in Jarulbunia, Segun Baghicha, Shilkhali Union. His bloodied body was recovered the following morning, bearing multiple sharp-force injuries across his body.
Immediately after the incident, Selina Akter lodged a murder complaint with Pekuya Police Station, accusing several neighbours of killing her husband over longstanding family disputes. She claimed that she had survived by hiding in an adjacent room. Based on her allegations, the police initially detained and questioned several neighbours.
However, investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies between Selina’s statements and the evidence at the scene. Police observed no signs of forced entry into the house through doors or windows. Furthermore, discrepancies regarding the timing and circumstances of the attack raised doubts about her account.
Subsequent analysis of mobile phone call records, technical evidence, and confidential local sources revealed that Selina had been in a close relationship with a man named Abdur Razzak from the same area. Police suspect that Jasim Uddin may have discovered the relationship or witnessed compromising behaviour on the night of the murder, which prompted the fatal attack with a sharp weapon.
Sub-Inspector Sunayan Barua, the lead investigator, said: “Discrepancies between the initial complaint and the physical evidence prompted us to explore alternative scenarios. Technical data and witness analysis painted a very different picture of events.”
Approximately a month and a week after the murder, Jasim’s father, Md. Nur Ahmed, filed a fresh murder case, naming Selina Akter as the principal accused alongside her alleged paramour, Abdur Razzak, and several others. This new investigation, combining prior evidence and technical findings, confirmed that the first complaint had been deliberately misleading.
Selina had been in hiding since the filing of the new case. Pekuya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khairul Alam confirmed that she had been arrested and presented before the court, and a seven-day remand request has been filed for further questioning. Operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining fugitives.
