Mushfiqur Rahim Headlines Milestone School’s Resilience Festival

In a moving display of community spirit and emotional recovery, Milestone School and College hosted the “Milestone Sports Festival 2026” at its Diabari campus. The event featured a special appearance by Bangladesh’s veteran cricketing icon, Mushfiqur Rahim, who joined students in a day of athletic engagement aimed at fostering mental well-being and resilience following the tragic events of 21 July 2025.

Rebuilding Through Collective Joy

The festival was conceived as a therapeutic intervention to help students move past trauma and forge new, positive memories. Organisers emphasized that sport serves as a powerful medium for restoring psychological strength, promoting the values of empathy and teamwork over pure competition.

The morning began with a solemn rendition of the national anthem, followed by the symbolic release of pigeons to represent a future of peace and hope. Ichiguchi Tomohide, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh, underscored the importance of the initiative, stating that participatory activities are essential for rebuilding the confidence of young minds.

Wisdom on the Pitch: Lessons from Loss

The highlight of the festivities was a friendly cricket match, where Mushfiqur Rahim traded the intensity of the international arena for the camaraderie of the school field. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman participated in a “mini ball-throw” game and a short cricket bout, prioritising the students’ enjoyment over the scoreboard.

Addressing the assembly, Rahim shared a heartfelt message on the nature of success. “I have garnered my most significant life lessons from the matches I lost, rather than the ones I won,” he told the captivated audience. He spent over an hour answering student questions, stressing that discipline and patience are the true hallmarks of a champion.

Expanding the Horizons of Learning

The event also marked the official inauguration of a Board Game Club at the Diabari campus. Kenji Kimura of MUFG Bank highlighted that strategic games are vital for developing cognitive skills, such as logical reasoning and collaborative problem-solving. Dr Niloy Ranjan Biswas of Ekmattra Society further noted that such creative outlets are “effective and positive mediums” for ensuring long-term mental health.

The festival concluded with a renewed sense of unity among the faculty and students. The collaboration between JICA, Ekmattra, and MUFG Bank demonstrated a multi-sectoral commitment to the holistic development of Bangladeshi youth, proving that sports can be a bridge to recovery and a brighter academic future.
