Modhumoti Bank PLC has taken a significant step towards strengthening its institutional capacity in Shariah-compliant finance by organising a comprehensive, day-long professional training workshop on Islamic banking. Titled “Fundamentals of Islamic Banking: Concepts, Operations and Investment Mechanisms”, the programme was held on Saturday at the bank’s head office in Gulshan, Dhaka. The initiative is part of the bank’s broader strategy to enhance internal expertise, ensure regulatory compliance, and improve the quality and consistency of Islamic banking services across its network.
The workshop brought together senior leadership, heads of departments, and branch-level managers, reflecting a deliberate effort to foster organisation-wide alignment on Islamic banking principles and practices. Such broad-based participation underscored the bank’s intention to integrate Shariah-based finance not merely as a product line, but as a coherent operational framework embedded across its business units.
The opening session was addressed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Modhumoti Bank, Md Shafiul Azam, who attended as the chief guest. In his remarks, he highlighted the growing relevance of Islamic banking within Bangladesh’s financial sector, noting its emphasis on fairness, risk-sharing, and a close linkage with the real economy. According to him, these foundational principles position Islamic banking as a sustainable and ethically grounded alternative within a rapidly evolving financial landscape. He reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to expanding its portfolio of Shariah-compliant products and services while maintaining alignment with regulatory requirements and safeguarding customer confidence.
Special guests at the workshop included Additional Managing Director Shahnawaz Chowdhury and Deputy Managing Director and Chief Business Officer Arab Fazlur Rahman. Senior officials from risk management, human resources, and the Islamic banking division also played an active role. The presence of members of the management committee, executives, and branch managers transformed the programme into an inclusive learning platform that encouraged dialogue across functional levels.
The training sessions covered the theoretical foundations of Islamic banking, its day-to-day operational structures, and Shariah-compliant investment models. Particular emphasis was placed on profit-and-loss sharing principles, asset-backed financing, risk management practices, and adherence to Shariah governance frameworks. Through practical examples and case studies, participants were guided on how to translate theoretical knowledge into effective application at branch level, thereby ensuring service quality, compliance, and operational uniformity.
Bank officials noted that such capacity-building initiatives form part of a long-term human resource development strategy aimed at promoting transparency, ethical conduct, and professional competence in Islamic banking services. By investing in skilled and well-trained personnel, Modhumoti Bank aspires to position itself as a responsible and capable institution in Bangladesh’s Islamic banking segment.
