The Hemayetpur-Singair regional highway was the scene of a devastating multi-vehicle accident on Monday, 26 January, resulting in the tragic death of a young motorcyclist. The incident, occurring at the height of the afternoon commute, has once again underscored the perilous conditions faced by light-vehicle commuters on Bangladesh’s arterial road networks.

Chronicle of the Crash
The accident unfolded at approximately 4:30 pm in the Rishibari area. According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the tragedy was precipitated by a high-speed, head-on collision between a Dhaka-bound lorry laden with cement and a covered van travelling in the opposite direction towards Manikganj.
The victim, identified as Abir Hossain, 17, was navigating the stretch on his motorcycle when he was caught in the path of the swaying cement lorry during the initial impact. The force of the strike was catastrophic; the teenager, a resident of Kholapara and the son of Aminul Islam, succumbed to his injuries at the scene before medical assistance could arrive.
Emergency Response and Escape
The kinetic energy of the crash sent the covered van careening off the tarmac, where it eventually plummeted into a roadside marsh. Local bystanders acted quickly to extricate the driver of the van, who was transported to the Singair Upazila Health Complex with significant injuries.
In a contentious turn of events, the driver of the cement lorry managed to flee the scene with his vehicle immediately after the collision. Despite the likely damage to the lorry, the driver eluded capture, sparking a police manhunt across the district.

Mazharul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Singair Police Station, confirmed that law enforcement has recovered the victim’s body for post-mortem formalities and has seized the damaged covered van. “We are currently reviewing local surveillance and witness statements to identify the fleeing cement lorry,” the OC stated. “The legal process is currently underway to ensure those responsible are held to account.”
The Kholapara community remains in mourning for a life cut short, with local residents calling for tighter regulations on heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) that frequently dominate the regional highways with little regard for speed limits.
