US star warned ahead of World Cup over fixing allegations

In a significant blow to United States cricket ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, star all-rounder Aaron Jones has been provisionally suspended following serious corruption allegations. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged Jones with multiple breaches of anti-corruption codes, covering both domestic and international cricket.

According to an ICC media release, the 31-year-old American cricketer faces five charges linked to his involvement in alleged match-fixing and related misconduct during the 2023–24 Caribbean domestic tournament, the BIM10. Of these, three charges fall under Cricket West Indies’ anti-corruption code, while the remaining two relate to international cricket and are being investigated under ICC’s anti-corruption framework.

The ICC alleges that Jones may have attempted to manipulate match outcomes or aspects of play, withheld information on corrupt approaches, failed to cooperate with investigations, and concealed or distorted crucial evidence. These are considered serious offences under both domestic and international anti-corruption regulations.

The governing body further noted that the case is part of a broader investigation, which could implicate additional players and associated personnel, potentially resulting in further charges in the future. In response, Jones has been immediately barred from participating in all cricket activities until the completion of the disciplinary process.

Jones has 14 days from 28 January 2026 to submit a written response to the charges. The ICC has stated it will make no further comment until the formal proceedings are concluded.

The timing of the suspension is particularly critical as Jones had been attending the United States team training camp in Sri Lanka, preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The squad camp initially included 18 players, from which a final 15-member World Cup roster will be selected next month. With the suspension in effect, Jones is no longer eligible for selection.

Since making his international debut in 2019, Jones has represented the United States in 52 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 48 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He has also featured in prominent franchise leagues such as the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and Major League Cricket (MLC), earning a reputation as one of the rising stars of American cricket.
