In a strategic move that significantly bolsters its military footprint in the Horn of Africa, Turkey has deployed a contingent of F-16 Fighting Falcons to Somalia. Senior officials confirmed the arrival of the multi-role fighter jets on Thursday, marking a sophisticated escalation in Ankara’s long-standing security partnership with the Mogadishu-based government.
A Deep-Rooted Strategic Alliance
Since the early 1990s, when Somalia was first plunged into a devastating civil war, Turkey has emerged as a cornerstone of the nation’s reconstruction efforts. Ankara has consistently provided extensive military training, economic investment, and humanitarian aid. This latest deployment underscores Turkey’s commitment to safeguarding its interests and those of its ally in an increasingly volatile region.
A Turkish government official confirmed the deployment but remained tight-lipped regarding the exact number of airframes involved. A second official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, clarified the operational nature of the mission. “This is for our own security,” the official noted, stressing that the advanced aircraft will be operated exclusively by Turkish personnel rather than Somali crews.
The Role of TURKSOM and Counter-Terrorism
Turkey’s military presence in Somalia is centred around the TURKSOM Military Training Facility in Mogadishu. Opened in 2017, it remains Turkey’s largest overseas military base. The Turkish Ministry of Defence maintains an Air Component Command and a dedicated task force there to enhance Somalia’s counter-terrorism capabilities, primarily against the Al-Qaeda-linked insurgent group, Al-Shabaab.

The deployment follows a period of heightened diplomatic friction. Ankara recently issued a scathing condemnation of reports suggesting Israel might recognise the self-proclaimed Republic of Somaliland. Turkey described such a move as a “blatant interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.”
While Somaliland has operated autonomously since 1991—boasting its own currency, army, and relative stability—Mogadishu views it as an integral part of its sovereign territory. By deploying high-performance jets, Turkey is sending a clear signal of deterrence against regional secessionism and external interference.
As Al-Shabaab continues to launch deadly strikes within the capital, the presence of Turkish F-16s provides a significant psychological and tactical advantage, ensuring that the skies over the Horn of Africa remain under the watchful eye of one of NATO’s most capable air forces.
