Lionel Messi is reportedly on the verge of making a sensational return to European club football, this time with Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray. The move comes with a highly unusual stipulation: Messi would only participate in home matches at the club’s stadium, avoiding any away fixtures. The reasoning behind this arrangement is largely linked to his preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner aims to maintain peak fitness while minimising injury risk.
According to renowned Turkish football analyst Levent Tüzemen, discussions between Messi and Galatasaray have already taken place. Tüzemen claims that Messi is considering a short-term four-month contract, during which he would feature in 12 matches, all scheduled at Galatasaray’s home ground, Rams Park, in Istanbul. This unusual condition, while surprising, is said to be designed to manage the immense public attention Messi would inevitably draw.
Speaking live on A Spor following Galatasaray’s 4–0 victory over Kayserispor, Tüzemen explained, “The management has confirmed the discussions. They had attempted to bring Messi from the United States, but he found the pace of the MLS physically demanding and wants to avoid any risk of injury ahead of the World Cup.”
Even though Messi reportedly declined an offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, Tüzemen emphasised the potential impact of his move to Turkey: “If Messi arrives, over a million fans are likely to converge on airports and the stadium. He has made it clear that he will only play in Istanbul for these 12 matches.”
Despite his preference for home games, Tüzemen added that Messi could still appear in the Turkish Cup final if Galatasaray, under coach Okan Buruk, reaches the stage. Messi himself has previously indicated that he wants to avoid being a burden for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. With the new MLS season starting in spring, he may not receive the competitive challenge he needs before the tournament, prompting exploration of European options.
Former player Terry Felan, who played in the United States with Charleston Battery, commented, “Messi is clearly thinking about the World Cup—he needs a high level of competition to stay fit. Saudi Arabia offers him wealth, but not the necessary intensity. For Messi, current matches feel too easy, almost like playing on a console, which is not ideal for his preparation.”
Messi has yet to officially confirm his participation in the 2026 World Cup, though expectations are high that he will respond to coach Lionel Scaloni’s call and lead Argentina as captain. Notably, the tournament could see Messi surpass 200 international appearances.
