In a significant move in the history of Bangladesh Police, 153 officers have recently received promotions, marking a milestone in the force’s efforts to strengthen leadership and operational efficiency. The promotions were formalised through three separate gazette notifications signed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Sunday. The announcements were officially made public today, providing clarity for both the general public and the officers concerned.
According to the notifications, the largest group of promoted officers comprises those advancing from Sub-Inspector of Police (Unarmed) to Inspector of Police (Unarmed), totalling 100 officers. In addition, 47 officers have been elevated from Sub-Inspector of Police (Armed) to Inspector of Police (Armed). Furthermore, six Police Sergeants have been promoted to the rank of Inspector of Police (City & Traffic Unit).
The distribution of promotions by category is as follows:
| Promotion Type | Number of Officers | Sub-Category |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-Inspector (Unarmed) → Inspector (Unarmed) | 100 | General Police |
| Sub-Inspector (Armed) → Inspector (Armed) | 47 | Armed Police Force |
| Police Sergeant → Inspector (City & Traffic) | 6 | City & Traffic Unit |
| Total | 153 | – |
Notably, these promotions come in anticipation of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and the associated referendum, scheduled for 12 February. With these promotions, the police force is expected to operate with greater vigilance and responsibility, ensuring robust security measures during the electoral process.
IGP Baharul Alam emphasised the importance of these promotions, stating, “The officers promoted will discharge their duties responsibly in the electoral environment, guaranteeing citizen safety and service. This step will also enhance the operational capacity and experience of our force.”
Beyond operational preparedness, the promotions are intended to serve as a source of motivation and morale boost for the officers. Newly promoted Inspectors are now eligible to undertake critical responsibilities, including election security, city and traffic management, and supervision of general policing activities.
Overall, this initiative aims to further professionalise the Bangladesh Police, equipping them to ensure the safety of citizens and voters during high-stakes events while reinforcing the force’s readiness, competence, and accountability.
