A school student dies in clash between two groups in Narsingdi.

In a tragic escalation of local gang-related tensions, a 14-year-old schoolboy was fatally shot during a violent clash in Raypura Upazila, Narsingdi. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, 4 February, around 6:00 AM in Saydabad, within the Srinagar Union of the upazila.

The deceased, Mustakim Mia, was a seventh-grade student at a nearby school and the son of Masud Rana, a migrant worker residing in Saudi Arabia. Eyewitnesses reported that Mustakim was standing in his family’s courtyard when gunfire erupted, striking him. Family members stated that he died instantly at the scene.

According to police and local sources, the area has long been plagued by rivalry between two local factions competing for territorial control. Previous confrontations between the groups have repeatedly resulted in injuries, property damage, and looting, affecting both men and women in the community.

Locals identified the leaders of the rival factions as Hanif Master and Ershad Mia. On the morning of the incident, supporters of Ershad Mia reportedly armed themselves with firearms and crude weapons and attacked homes of Hanif Master’s followers, triggering the violent confrontation. During the clash, Masum, also known as Chaina—the nephew of former Union Parishad member Firoz Mia from Ershad’s faction—fired a gun, fatally wounding Mustakim.

At least ten people were injured in the skirmish, including three individuals shot: Rafiqul Islam (37), Sohan (26), and Rozina Begum (35). The injured were admitted to various hospitals, though the identities of the remaining victims are yet to be confirmed.

The surge in violence prompted the deployment of additional security personnel, including police, army, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) units, to restore order in the area. Authorities have stated that the situation is now under control.

Mustakim’s mother, Shahana Begum, emotionally described the moment: “My son had stepped out into the courtyard that morning. Suddenly, shots were fired. We have no involvement with any group. I demand exemplary punishment for those who have taken my child from me.”

Medical confirmation came from Bimal Chandra Dhar, an emergency physician at Raypura Upazila Health Complex, who said, “The boy was brought in with a gunshot wound to the left side of his body. The bullet had passed through his body. He was declared dead after examination.”

Raypura police station officer-in-charge, Md. Mujibur Rahman, confirmed the fatality and stated that a manhunt is underway to apprehend those involved. The exact number of casualties is still being verified.
