The former Director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), and dismissed official, Md Afzal Nasir, has been placed on a further two-day remand by a court in connection with a murder case linked to a protest-related incident in Uttara East Police Station area of Dhaka.
On Monday (27 April), after the completion of his previous four-day remand, Afzal Nasir was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka. Following a hearing, the court issued the fresh remand order.
During the proceedings, the investigation officer of Uttara East Police Station, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashraful Alam, submitted an application seeking a seven-day remand, arguing that it was necessary for the sake of a proper and effective investigation. The prosecution side was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman, who supported the remand plea. After hearing both sides, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted a two-day remand.
Earlier, on 23 April, Afzal Nasir had been placed on a four-day remand in the same case. According to case records, he has so far been remanded for a total of 28 days across multiple cases.
Case background
The case is related to the killing of Md Mahmudul Hasan during a protest linked to an anti-discrimination student movement on 5 August 2024. According to the case statement, Mahmudul Hasan participated in a procession on that day.
At approximately 4:00 pm, when the procession reached the area beneath the Azampur foot overbridge on the eastern side of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway in Uttara East Police Station area, unidentified individuals along with the accused allegedly opened fire while being unlawfully armed.
Mahmudul Hasan was reportedly struck by bullets fired during the incident, causing him to collapse on the road. He was subsequently rescued and taken to Kuwait Maitree Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, a murder case was filed at Uttara East Police Station by the victim’s maternal uncle as the complainant. The case names Afzal Nasir as an accused alongside unidentified persons.
Arrest and related proceedings
Afzal Nasir was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the early hours of 30 March. He was taken into custody from house number 864 on Road 12 in Mirpur DOHS, Dhaka.
Since his arrest, he has been shown arrested in multiple murder cases filed at Mirpur Model Police Station and Paltan Police Station. He has been produced before court on several occasions and placed on remand in phases for custodial interrogation.
