Argentina have revised their preparations ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 encounter against Cape Verde, opting to hold one final full training session at their base in Kansas before travelling to Miami for the knockout fixture.
The reigning world champions are scheduled to face the African nation at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with head coach Lionel Scaloni making a late adjustment to the team’s travel itinerary in an effort to maximise preparation ahead of the must-win encounter.
Under the original schedule, Argentina were expected to travel to the match venue a day earlier. Instead, Scaloni decided to keep the squad in Kansas for an additional training session before boarding a flight to Miami later the same day.
The final full training session, held on Wednesday evening Bangladesh time, was expected to take place behind closed doors. It represents Argentina’s last complete tactical workout before the knockout match and is likely to play a decisive role in determining the starting line-up.
Following the session, the Albiceleste are due to depart Kansas City at around 2:00pm local time for Miami. The squad will then undertake a light recovery and tactical session on Thursday before taking on Cape Verde on Friday local time, which corresponds to early Saturday morning in Bangladesh.
The decision to remain in Kansas for longer suggests Scaloni is prioritising uninterrupted preparation over early arrival at the match venue. Knockout fixtures leave no room for error, and every training session becomes increasingly valuable as teams fine-tune tactical details and assess player fitness.
Much of the attention during the final practice has centred on team selection, although Scaloni has once again refused to reveal his plans publicly. During the portion of training open to the media, the Argentina coach deliberately avoided providing clues about his preferred starting XI by mixing likely starters with other squad members wearing identical training bibs.
That approach has become a familiar feature of Scaloni’s management style, with the coach often keeping both opponents and the media guessing until shortly before kick-off.
Several positions remain undecided.
Competition continues at left-back, where Nicolás Tagliafico and Facundo Medina are both vying for a place in the starting side. Tagliafico’s experience gives him a strong case, while Medina has impressed whenever called upon, leaving Scaloni with a difficult decision.
Another key selection issue concerns central defence. Cristian Romero is nearing full fitness after recovering from injury, raising the question of whether he will immediately return to the starting line-up or whether veteran Nicolás Otamendi will retain his place after deputising in recent matches.
The biggest debate, however, surrounds Argentina’s attacking line.
Captain Lionel Messi is certain to lead the attack, but the identity of his strike partner remains uncertain. Scaloni must choose between Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez, two forwards who offer contrasting qualities.
Lautaro provides a traditional centre-forward presence with clinical finishing inside the penalty area, while Álvarez contributes relentless pressing, intelligent movement and the ability to operate across the front line. Argentine media reports suggest Lautaro currently holds a slight advantage in the race for a starting berth, although the coaching staff have offered no official indication.
If Romero is declared fully fit, he is widely expected to reclaim his place in central defence. Tagliafico is also considered a strong contender to return to the starting XI, although Scaloni is unlikely to confirm any decisions before match day.
Argentina enter the knockout stage carrying the expectations that accompany their status as defending world champions. Led by Messi and guided by Scaloni, the Albiceleste have built a reputation for tactical discipline, defensive organisation and composure in high-pressure situations.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, will relish the opportunity to challenge one of world football’s traditional powerhouses. Knockout football has often produced unexpected results, and Argentina know they cannot afford to underestimate an opponent with nothing to lose.
With one final training session complete before the journey to Miami, Scaloni’s focus now turns to making the final selection decisions that could shape Argentina’s bid to defend their World Cup crown. The reigning champions will be determined to begin the knockout phase with a convincing performance as they seek another step towards football’s biggest prize.
