Arson Attempted at Four Netrokona Polling Stations

In Netrokona Sadar Upazila, four polling stations experienced attempted arson in the early hours of Monday, 9 February, around 1:30 a.m. Local sources reported that miscreants first poured petrol into a voting room at Parla Government Primary School in the town area and set it alight. Swift action by residents, however, prevented the fire from spreading, averting a major incident.

Following this, three additional polling stations in the Upazila—Light Government Primary School, Bamnamoha Government Primary School, and Darijagi Government Primary School—were targeted in a similar fashion. Prompt intervention by locals ensured the fires were quickly contained. Official and local reports indicate that while benches and some furniture were damaged, the main polling areas suffered no significant harm.

On receiving the news, police and law enforcement personnel visited the affected sites on Tuesday morning. Sajal Kumar Sarkar, Additional Superintendent of Police of Sadar Circle, stated, “Such acts are likely intended to instil fear among the public. We are analysing CCTV footage to identify the culprits and will bring them to justice under the law.”

Asma Binte Rafiq, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer, reassured the public: “The polling stations have sustained minimal damage. These acts are meant to create panic, but normal voting operations can continue. Legal action will follow after a proper investigation.”

Authorities and local residents are maintaining heightened vigilance to ensure the electoral process proceeds smoothly. While these arson attempts aimed to intimidate voters, security measures are in place to safeguard polling activities.
