The President’s motorcade was held up at a traffic signal in Karwan Bazar.

A rare sight unfolded on the streets of Dhaka on Wednesday as the motorcade of President Md. Sahabuddin came to a halt at a traffic signal in Karwan Bazar, highlighting the changing dynamics of VIP movement in the city.

Historically, the movement of VIPs in Dhaka was governed by strict protocols that often caused public inconvenience. Roads would be closed, pedestrians restricted, and normal traffic diverted to ensure uninterrupted passage for high-ranking officials. However, in recent years, these rules have gradually relaxed, with VIPs now often travelling under ordinary traffic conditions, allowing the city to function more smoothly.

On the occasion of National Shaheed Sainik Day, President Md. Sahabuddin had been en route to pay homage at the Banani military cemetery when his motorcade encountered the traffic congestion typical of Karwan Bazar. At one point, the presidential convoy was forced to wait at a red light, causing a temporary hold-up for both official and civilian vehicles behind it. The signal cleared after a brief pause, and the convoy resumed its journey without incident.

While unusual in earlier decades, such occurrences are becoming more commonplace. Notably, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s motorcade has also been observed stuck in traffic, occasionally allowing onlookers to capture photographs alongside the VIPs—scenes unimaginable just a few years ago.

This shift marks a significant departure from the past. During previous administrations, entire streets would be cordoned off for VIP passage, and even sidewalks were off-limits to pedestrians. Following his first day in office, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed the Police Commissioner to minimise such disruptions, setting a precedent that now influences the movement of all top officials, including the president.

The incident at Karwan Bazar serves as a visible reminder of Dhaka’s evolving approach to governance and urban mobility—balancing respect for office with the practicalities of everyday city life. Citizens now witness high-ranking officials navigating traffic much like any other commuter, signalling a gradual normalisation of protocol and a reduction in the inconvenience previously associated with VIP movements.
