Asha Bhosle Passes Away Aged 92

Veteran playback singer and one of Indian cinema’s most influential voices, Asha Bhosle, has died at the age of 92. She passed away on Sunday at 12:00 noon at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where she had been receiving treatment. She was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after being diagnosed with heart-related complications and respiratory illness.

Hospital officials stated that the singer had been dealing with age-associated health issues for several months. Her condition reportedly worsened on Saturday night, leading to her transfer to the intensive care unit. The death was confirmed by her son, Anand Bhosle. Her final rites are scheduled to be performed on Monday.

Born in 1933 into a musically distinguished family, Asha Bhosle became one of the most prolific and versatile playback singers in Indian film history. She began singing professionally at the age of nine and recorded her first film song in 1943. By the 1950s, she had established a strong presence in the Hindi film industry. Despite being initially overshadowed by her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, she developed a distinct vocal identity that sustained her long and varied career.

At the beginning of her career, she was frequently associated with lighter and cabaret-style songs. Over time, however, she expanded her repertoire to include classical and semi-classical compositions, demonstrating considerable artistic range. Her work in the film Umrao Jaan is widely regarded as one of her most accomplished performances. Throughout her career, she received seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and two National Film Awards. Her notable songs include “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from Umrao Jaan and “Mera Kuch Samaan” from Ijaazat.

In a 2023 interview, she noted that she did not regularly listen to contemporary music for learning purposes. Instead, she preferred classical music and the performances of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, while occasionally appreciating singers such as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Her personal life was marked by significant public attention. At the age of 16, she married her personal secretary, Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was 31 years old, against her family’s wishes. The marriage ended in 1960 following reported domestic difficulties, after which she raised her three children independently.

In 1980, she married music director Rahul Dev Burman, widely known as R. D. Burman, despite initial opposition from his family. Their marriage continued until his death in 1994. In her later years, she was frequently accompanied by her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle.
