Bangladesh Police Pledge Action Against Fraudulent July Movement Lawsuits

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced that rigorous legal measures are being institutionalised against individuals who exploit the historic July 2024 mass uprising to file vexatious and fabricated lawsuits aimed at harassing innocent citizens.

This significant policy directive was disclosed by the Additional Commissioner and Chief of the Detective Branch, Shafiqul Islam, during a high-profile press conference convened at the DB headquarters on Thursday morning. While the briefing was initially organised to unveil the successes of a recent law enforcement crackdown on transnational online gambling syndicates, the discourse quickly pivoted to the critical issue of judicial integrity and police accountability surrounding the aftermath of the July student-led movement.

Strict Oversight and Procedural Transparency

Addressing journalists’ concerns regarding potential witch-hunts and the weaponisation of the legal system, the DB Chief emphasised the law enforcement agency’s unwavering commitment to absolute transparency and due process.

“We are currently investigating a total of 59 complex cases directly related to the July movement,” Shafiqul Islam stated. “Each case is being scrutinised with the utmost gravity and diligence to ensure that the course of justice remains untainted by personal vendettas or political opportunism.”

To eliminate the risk of wrongful prosecution, the Detective Branch has instituted a multi-layered monitoring framework:

  • Fortnightly Review Seminars: Specialized evaluation panels convene every fifteen days to meticulously review the evidentiary progress of each case.

  • Centralized Supervision: A dedicated, independent monitoring cell has been established at the Police Headquarters to oversee the transparency of the investigations.

  • Data-Driven Clearance: Final reports will be submitted exclusively after the thorough, empirical analysis of digital and physical forensics.

The DB chief reassured the public that no innocent individual would face unlawful harassment, and those found guilty of instigating malicious, bad-faith litigations would face severe statutory penalties.

Massive Syndicate Dismantled in Anti-Gambling Sweep

In tandem with the judicial updates, the Detective Branch detailed a monumental breakthrough in its offensive against the country’s burgeoning underground digital economy. Investigators successfully neutralised a sophisticated criminal network facilitating illicit online gambling operations and laundering substantial capital out of the domestic economy.

The specialised operation culminated in the apprehension of six core syndicate members. Law enforcement officials seized an unprecedented haul of technical infrastructure, including approximately 6,500 mobile SIM cards seamlessly integrated with Mobile Financial Services (MFS) accounts.

According to DB intelligence, these pre-activated MFS accounts served as the primary financial conduits for masking transaction trails, routing millions in undeclared funds derived from illicit betting applications. The suspects are currently in police custody, facing rigorous interrogation as authorities seek to map out the broader domestic and international architectural networks of the digital gambling cartel.
