The Government of Bangladesh has announced plans to provide humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka, which has been severely affected by recent cyclonic storms and flooding. Relief materials and a rescue team are scheduled to be dispatched on 3 December, subject to favourable weather conditions, officials confirmed on Monday.
According to an official statement, two special aircraft from the Bangladesh Air Force have been arranged to transport the emergency aid. The initiative is being coordinated jointly by multiple agencies, including the Office of the Chief Adviser, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the Ministry of Health, the Armed Forces Division, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), and Essential Drugs Company Limited.
The relief operation comes in response to the devastating effects of Cyclone Ditwa, which has triggered sudden floods and landslides across Sri Lanka. The disaster has so far claimed the lives of 355 people, with at least 366 reported missing. More than 20,000 homes have been damaged, and approximately 210,000 people have been displaced to temporary shelters.
In light of the crisis, the Sri Lankan government has declared a state of emergency and appealed for international support to address the humanitarian needs of affected communities. The emergency response requires urgent delivery of essential supplies, medical assistance, and personnel to assist in rescue and relief operations.
Bangladesh’s humanitarian mission underscores its commitment to regional solidarity and disaster response cooperation. The aid package will include food, medicines, water, and other emergency supplies, while the rescue team will support local authorities in search and relief efforts. Officials emphasised that the operation is being carefully coordinated to ensure timely delivery and to minimise risks to personnel and resources.
