Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a man with 10 gold bars during a targeted anti-smuggling operation at the Darshana border area in Chuadanga district.
The arrest was made on Monday morning at the Darshana Old Railway Station area by a special patrol team from the Chuadanga Battalion of BGB. The operation was initiated on the basis of confidential intelligence received by the battalion commander, according to an official press release signed by Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Hasan, the commanding officer of the unit.
The detained individual has been identified as Md. Alamgir Khan (55), son of the late Badal Khan, residing in the Mobarokpara area of Darshana. He was reportedly attempting to cross from Bangladesh towards India through the border route when he was intercepted.
As part of the planned operation, BGB personnel positioned themselves in the early hours of Monday at approximately 05:50 am in the vicinity of the old railway station, an area identified as a sensitive point for cross-border movement. The suspect was observed moving through the area on foot in a manner that raised suspicion among the patrol team.
When challenged by the BGB personnel, he was signalled to stop. However, he allegedly disregarded the instructions and attempted to flee the scene. The patrol team then pursued and successfully apprehended him after a brief chase.
Following his detention, a thorough search was conducted. During the search, two separate packets were found concealed around his waist, wrapped with khaki-coloured adhesive tape. Upon opening these packets, the patrol team recovered 10 gold bars.
The total weight of the seized gold was recorded at 1,166 grams. Authorities have estimated its market value at approximately 2.47 crore Bangladeshi taka, based on prevailing rates.
After the seizure, the accused was taken into custody and handed over for further processing. Officials confirmed that legal procedures are currently underway in accordance with applicable laws relating to smuggling and illegal possession of gold.

The BGB stated that the operation forms part of its routine and intelligence-driven efforts to prevent illegal cross-border trafficking activities in the Chuadanga border region. Areas such as railway stations and informal transit points are frequently monitored due to their vulnerability to smuggling attempts.
Authorities reiterated that surveillance and patrol operations along the border remain active and will continue to be strengthened to curb the movement of contraband goods, including gold. The arrested individual remains under investigation as legal proceedings continue.
