Bhanga Witnesses Renewed Eid Clashes Between Rival Factions

In Bhanga, Faridpur, festivities were overshadowed on Saturday morning as tensions erupted into violence immediately following Eid al-Fitr prayers. Two rival groups in Gopinathpur village, Hamirdi Union, engaged in a two-hour confrontation that left 10–12 homes vandalised and looted, marking a continuation of hostilities that began days earlier.

Local sources indicate the conflict stems from longstanding disputes over local influence and dominance between two factions. The first is led by 65-year-old Ismail Munshi, and the other by 45-year-old Kamrul Mia. Personal grievances and competition for authority within the village have periodically sparked clashes over the years.

The Saturday confrontation followed an initial skirmish on Thursday, 19 March. At approximately 9:00 pm, a verbal argument between Kamrul Mia and Fuad Hossain, son of Ismail Munshi, at a local tea shop escalated into a physical altercation. By midnight, both factions armed themselves with shields, rods, crowbars, and bricks, engaging in a torchlit battle lasting around an hour. Ten people were reported injured during this initial clash, prompting Bhanga police and local community elders to intervene and restore order.

Despite the temporary calm, tensions persisted. On Saturday morning, shortly after Eid prayers, the two groups clashed again using similar makeshift weapons. The renewed violence lasted approximately two hours, during which 10–12 homes were damaged and looted, and several villagers sustained injuries before police regained control.

Md. Asaduzzaman, Ward 5 member of Hamirdi Union Parishad, highlighted the complexity of the conflict: “The rivalry between Ismail Munshi and Kamrul Mia is longstanding, and both are closely related, which complicates matters. Thursday’s argument escalated quickly, and despite intervention, they clashed again on Saturday. Many homes were vandalised and looted.”

Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident, stating: “Upon receiving reports of the clashes, police were deployed immediately. Several houses were damaged and looted, but the situation has now been brought under control.” Authorities have urged the rival factions to maintain peace, especially during religious and cultural festivities.
