Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested an alleged drug trafficker and seized 1,890 yaba tablets during an anti-narcotics operation along the border in Sunamganj district.
The suspect, identified as Sagar Mia, was detained by members of BGB’s patrol unit from the Birendranagar Border Outpost (BOP) under the 28 Border Guard Battalion. The arrest took place on Friday evening in the border এলাকায় of Takerghat, located in Tahirpur upazila, a region known for its proximity to the international frontier and vulnerability to smuggling activities.
According to officials, Sagar Mia is the son of Raham Ali and a resident of Borochhara border village in Tahirpur. During the operation, BGB personnel recovered 1,890 yaba tablets from his possession. In addition to the narcotics, law enforcers also confiscated a motorcycle believed to have been used for transporting the illegal drugs.
Lieutenant Colonel AKM Zakaria Kadir, Commanding Officer of the 28 Border Guard Battalion in Sunamganj, confirmed the incident. He stated that the patrol team acted on intelligence information regarding possible narcotics movement through the border route.
Following the arrest, a formal case was filed by Havildar Nurul Islam of Birendranagar BOP. The accused was later handed over to Tahirpur Police Station after the completion of preliminary legal procedures.
On Saturday, police produced the suspect before the court in connection with the narcotics case.
Border regions in north-eastern Bangladesh, particularly those adjacent to India, have long been identified as routes for the trafficking of contraband items, including yaba, cannabis, and other illegal substances. Security agencies have intensified surveillance and anti-smuggling drives in recent years to curb the growing flow of narcotics into local markets.
Yaba, a tablet containing methamphetamine and caffeine, remains one of the most widely trafficked narcotics in Bangladesh. Authorities have repeatedly warned that the spread of such drugs is fuelling addiction and associated crimes, particularly among young people.
