A woman and a local businessman have been arrested in a high-profile bribery attempt targeting the Superintendent of Police in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar district, Bangladesh. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon during an official high-level police inspection at Kulaura Police Station, triggering immediate administrative action and widespread local discussion.
According to police sources, the arrested individuals have been identified as Jesmin Akhtar, daughter of the late Tahir Ali from Abdurpur village, and Moinul Islam Chowdhury Samad, a businessman from Bhabanipur village in Raoutgaon Union, son of the late Atiqur Rahman Chowdhury. Both were detained on the spot with the alleged bribe money.
Jesmin Akhtar is reportedly engaged in an ongoing legal and familial dispute with her former husband, Mahtab Mia. She had earlier made multiple allegations against him, including harassment and domestic conflict, with several matters already under judicial consideration. Recently, upon learning that her former husband was planning to travel abroad, she allegedly sought to obstruct the process through official intervention.

The event was attended by senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police of Moulvibazar, the Additional Superintendent of Police of the Kulaura Circle, and the Officer-in-Charge of the station.
During her interaction with the Superintendent of Police, Jesmin Akhtar reportedly requested assistance in preventing her former husband’s foreign travel. Shortly afterwards, Moinul Islam Chowdhury Samad allegedly presented an envelope containing a total of 200,000 taka. According to police accounts, 160,000 taka was discreetly withheld, while the remaining 40,000 taka was attempted to be handed over directly to the Superintendent of Police.
The suspicious nature of the exchange prompted immediate intervention. Acting on the Superintendent’s instruction, police detained both individuals on the spot along with the money. A case has since been filed by police at Kulaura Police Station, and preparations are underway to produce the accused before a court following completion of legal procedures.
