Lord Alex Carlyle, a member of the UK House of Lords, has issued a warning regarding Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections. He stated that all parties must act responsibly to ensure that controversial elections, like those in the past, do not recur. He also highlighted the urgent need to reform the International Crimes Tribunal, where Sheikh Hasina is currently on trial, to meet international standards.
On Thursday, Lord Carlyle noted that the ongoing political instability in Bangladesh is a matter of deep concern for the international community. He urged that the upcoming elections be participatory and free, with independent international observers overseeing the process to safeguard democratic participation.
He further emphasized that minority communities are under severe pressure and that their safety must be guaranteed by both the state and opposition forces.
