In a shocking late-night attack in Chirla village, Joypurhat Sadar Upazila, assailants broke into a home and fatally beat 50-year-old Nurun Nahar Begum. Her 16-year-old niece, Khadija Begum, sustained critical injuries during the assault. The incident occurred late on Tuesday night, 2 December.
Nurun Nahar, formerly married to Abdul Gafur, died en route to Joypurhat’s 250-bed General Hospital after being struck with an iron rod. Khadija Begum, the daughter of Abdul Matin and a tenth-grade student at Pollibala Girls’ School, was severely injured in the attack and subsequently transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for advanced treatment.
According to local sources, the assailants used iron rods and a tube-well handle in the assault. Abdul Matin, father of Khadija, recounted that he received an urgent call around 3 a.m. from his younger brother’s wife. Rushing to the scene, he found his sister killed and his daughter seriously injured.
Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Kader of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station confirmed that the post-mortem examination of the deceased is ongoing. Khadija Begum remains hospitalised under intensive care. The motive behind the attack is not yet clear and may be determined once Khadija is able to provide a statement.
