Central Women’s League Leader Arrested While Visiting Ill Mother

A central committee member of the Jubo Mohila League has been arrested by police after reportedly returning to her family home in Madaripur’s Shibchar Upazila to visit her ailing mother.

Sanjida Akter, who is also a former leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League at Eden Mohila College, was taken into custody during a late-night police operation carried out at her residence in Kumerpara village under Umedpur Union. According to police, the arrest took place at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday following intelligence indicating her presence at the property.

She was produced before a court on Sunday and subsequently sent to jail through judicial proceedings.

Local sources said Sanjida had travelled to her ancestral home only a few days earlier to spend time with and care for her ill mother. Acting on confidential information regarding her whereabouts, police conducted a raid and arrested her from the residence. She is the daughter of Ismail Kabiraj and a resident of Umedpur Union in Shibchar Upazila.

Residents familiar with her background said Sanjida was formerly a student at Eden Mohila College in Dhaka, where she became actively involved in student politics through the Bangladesh Chhatra League. During her years in higher education, she held leadership responsibilities within the organisation before moving into national politics.

She later served as a member of the central committee of the Jubo Mohila League, the women’s wing affiliated with the ruling Awami League. In addition, she previously held the position of General Secretary of the Bangabandhu Law Students’ Council, further expanding her involvement in student and youth political organisations.

Shibchar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain confirmed the arrest, stating that Sanjida Akter had been detained in connection with a sabotage case. He did not disclose additional details regarding the specific allegations or the stage of the investigation.

Following her appearance before the court on Sunday, judicial authorities ordered that she be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.

The arrest comes amid continuing legal action against a number of political leaders and activists across the country in connection with cases involving alleged acts of sabotage and other criminal offences. As with any criminal proceeding, the allegations against the accused remain subject to judicial examination and determination by the courts.
