Wife Dies After Husband’s Knife Attack at Hospital

A 26-year-old housewife died after allegedly being stabbed by her husband while she had gone to a health complex in Naogaon’s Dhamoirhat upazila for medical treatment.

Munira Khatun died while undergoing treatment at Dhamoirhat Upazila Health Complex at around 11.30am on Monday, 27 July. Police have detained her husband, Farhad Hossain, in connection with the incident.

Munira was the daughter of Masud, a resident of Amarpur village in Dhamoirhat upazila. Farhad is the son of Helal Uddin of Atul village in Joypurhat district. According to police, the couple had been experiencing marital disputes for a considerable period. Investigators initially suspect that the stabbing may have stemmed from an ongoing domestic conflict, although the precise circumstances are yet to be established.

According to local residents and police sources, Munira went to Dhamoirhat Upazila Health Complex on Monday morning with her sister, Mohsina, to seek medical care. Farhad, who had reportedly returned home from Dhaka on Sunday, 26 July, learned that his wife was at the hospital and went there.

Hospital sources and local residents said Farhad approached Munira outside the health complex and began speaking with her. The conversation reportedly escalated into an argument, with the couple becoming involved in a heated altercation. At one point, Farhad allegedly attacked Munira with a knife.

She sustained serious injuries to her chest and abdomen. After being stabbed, Munira was quickly taken to the emergency department of the same health complex, where doctors attempted to save her. Despite receiving treatment, her condition deteriorated and she died at around 11.30am.

The incident caused tension in and around the hospital premises, where patients and their relatives were present for treatment. The sudden act of violence also reportedly triggered panic among people in the area. Hospitals are generally regarded as places of safety and care, making an alleged violent attack within or immediately outside a healthcare facility particularly alarming for patients, attendants and staff.

After the attack, Farhad allegedly attempted to leave the hospital. However, members of the Ansar security force stationed at the facility reportedly detained him and later handed him over to police. He is now in police custody and is being questioned in connection with the incident.

Dhamoirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mintu Rahman confirmed Munira’s death. He said Farhad had been detained from the scene following the incident. Police have also prepared the inquest report of the deceased, while legal proceedings are under way and preparations are being made to file a case.

Police said the exact motive and circumstances surrounding the stabbing are being investigated. Although longstanding marital discord has emerged as a possible factor, investigators are examining what led to the confrontation and how the dispute escalated into a fatal knife attack.

Statements from eyewitnesses, hospital staff, relatives and other people connected with the incident may be collected as part of the investigation. Police are also expected to examine the sequence of events before and after the attack to establish the circumstances leading to Munira’s death.

The incident has left Munira’s family and relatives devastated and prompted grief and anger among local residents. Her death, following an alleged attack by her husband at a healthcare facility where she had gone to receive treatment, has also renewed concerns over the potentially devastating consequences of unresolved domestic disputes.

Police said further legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
