ChatGPT Marks Its Third Anniversary Today

The artificial intelligence–driven chatbot ChatGPT, which has transformed the global technology landscape, celebrates its anniversary today. Launched on 30 November 2022, ChatGPT reached 100 million users within just two months. Now, irrespective of age or profession, millions use it regularly, enabling the platform to achieve more than 800 million active weekly users in only three years.

Since entering the market, ChatGPT—developed by OpenAI—has introduced unprecedented changes in technology, society and the economy. It is far more than a chatbot; it is a groundbreaking tool that has brought artificial intelligence within the reach of ordinary people. Despite attempts by various organisations to introduce their own AI chatbots, ChatGPT has maintained its popularity.

The foundation of ChatGPT lies in the GPT architecture, a vast data-enabled structure built using Large Language Model (LLM) technology. As a result, it can engage in natural, human-like conversation while also writing code, answering complex queries, and producing creative content. Due to its use in everyday tasks, ChatGPT currently ranks as the fifth most visited website in the world.

ChatGPT responds to messages quickly and with accuracy. It can generate messages, articles and even poetry on its own. Its precise language and word choice often make its writing appear similar to that of a human. Beyond serving as a virtual tutor for students, it plays a significant role in producing creative content and rapidly analysing information.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, was founded on 8 December 2015 with a mission to use artificial intelligence for the welfare of humanity. Established by 11 entrepreneurs, the organisation included Greg Brockman (now President), Sam Altman (now Chief Executive Officer), and Elon Musk (founder of PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX). Although Elon Musk later departed from the company, Altman remained, and under his leadership ChatGPT was born.

Based in San Francisco, OpenAI originally operated as a non-profit organisation, but last October its valuation was set at 500 billion dollars. Microsoft holds 27 percent of OpenAI’s shares, worth approximately 135 billion dollars.
