Sports Journalist Zahir Bhuiya Killed in Road Accident on Khilgaon Flyover

Renowned sports journalist and media personality Zahir Bhuiya has died in a road accident. On Sunday (30 November), he had been present at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity election event. In the afternoon, a sudden silence fell over the venue as news of his untimely death spread, leaving the journalism and sports communities in mourning.

Zahir Bhuiya, 52, lost control of his motorcycle on the Khilgaon flyover in Dhaka and sustained critical injuries. He was a sports reporter for the newspaper Dainik Vorer Pata.

Around 4:45 pm, he was rescued and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where attending doctors declared him dead.

Zahir Uddin Bhuiya was the son of Shamsuddin Bhuiya from Chapitala village in Muradnagar, Comilla. He lived with his family in the middle Basabo area under Khilgaon police jurisdiction. He is survived by a son and two daughters.

His son, Rakib Bhuiya Tamim, said that his father was riding his motorcycle on the Khilgaon flyover at about 3:45 pm when an unknown vehicle struck him, causing him to lose control and suffer severe injuries. He was initially taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and later transferred to DMCH for advanced treatment, where doctors confirmed his death.

Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, said that the injured journalist was brought to the hospital from Khilgaon flyover and was declared dead by attending doctors. The body has been placed in the emergency department morgue, and the matter has been reported to the relevant police station.

Zahir Bhuiya had been involved in sports journalism for nearly two decades. He had previously worked for Dainik Manobzamin and primarily covered cricket, although he also reported on football and other sports. His sudden death has cast a shadow of grief over both the sports field and media community.
