In the annals of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, Colonel Abu Taher stands as an enduring symbol of unyielding courage, self-sacrifice, and revolutionary fervor. A distinguished freedom fighter, Sector Commander, military strategist, and prominent left-wing political leader, Colonel Taher played a monumental role in shaping the nation’s independence and its turbulent post-war political landscape. Decades after his untimely passing, his legacy continues to shine brightly in the national consciousness.

Abu Taher was born on 14 November 1938 in Badarpur, Assam. His family subsequently settled permanently in the Purbadhala upazila of Netrokona. Raised by his parents, Mohiuddin Ahmed and Ashrafunnesa, Taher demonstrated discipline, sharp intellect, and a profound sense of patriotism from an early age.
His early education took place at Prabartak School in Chittagong and Yusuph High School in Comilla. In 1959, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from MC College in Sylhet before pursuing further studies at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, University of Dhaka.
In 1961, Taher joined the Pakistan Army, earning his commission as an officer in 1962. Renowned for his exceptional strategic skills, leadership, and personal bravery, he rapidly distinguished himself within the ranks.
During the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, he saw fierce action on the Kashmir and Sialkot fronts, where he sustained serious injuries. For his extraordinary valour during the conflict, he became the only Bengali officer to be awarded the prestigious ‘Maroon Parachute Wing’ distinction.
When the Bangladesh Liberation War broke out in 1971, Taher resigned from the Pakistan Army to join the struggle for his motherland’s freedom. He was appointed Sector Commander of Sector 11. Under his visionary leadership and tactical expertise, Sector 11 executed numerous high-stakes operations that remain legendary chapters in Bangladesh’s military history.
During direct frontline combat, Taher suffered severe injuries that led to the amputation of one of his legs. Undeterred by physical disability, his resolve only strengthened as he continued to direct wartime operations. Notably, his brothers and sisters also actively fought under his command in Sector 11—a rare and remarkable example of family sacrifice in the country’s liberation movement.
Following independence, Colonel Taher served in the Bangladesh Army. However, driven by ideological differences, he subsequently resigned from his post to devote himself to socialist politics, advocating for an equitable and exploitation-free society.
He played a pivotal leadership role in the historic Sepoy-Janata Revolution (Soldier-People Uprising) of 7 November 1975, which led to the release of General Ziaur Rahman from house arrest and reshaped the national political narrative. Nevertheless, subsequent political shifts left Taher isolated from the centers of power.
He was subsequently arrested and brought before a clandestine military tribunal inside Dhaka Central Jail. Following a deeply controversial trial, Colonel Taher was sentenced to death and executed by hanging on 21 July 1976 at the age of 37.
Thirty-five years later, on 22 March 2011, the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh declared the 1976 military tribunal, its proceedings, and the execution illegal and unconstitutional, formally rectifying a grave historical injustice.
Colonel Abu Taher was far more than a decorated military hero; he was an uncompromising campaigner for justice, equality, and human emancipation. Rising above personal ambition and military status, he remained steadfast in his ideals until his final moments. His immense sacrifices, patriotism, and revolutionary spirit remain a profound source of inspiration for generations to come.
