Deadly Clash Erupts at Arbitration Meeting in Moulvibazar

A violent clash at a locally convened arbitration meeting over a long-standing land dispute in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district has left one elderly man dead and at least 30 others injured, turning what was intended as a reconciliation effort into a scene of bloodshed and chaos.

The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Mohammad Ali, a resident of Bulla village in Madhabpur. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon during a salish (informal arbitration meeting) organised to resolve a bitter dispute between two neighbouring families over ownership and possession of land.

Long-standing land dispute escalates

According to local sources and police, the dispute had been ongoing for an extended period between Mohammad Ali and the family of Kamal Mia, the son of neighbour Sanu Mia. Despite repeated attempts at mediation within the community, tensions had reportedly remained unresolved, eventually prompting elders to arrange a formal arbitration meeting in the village.

However, instead of achieving reconciliation, the meeting rapidly descended into confrontation. Witnesses reported that heated arguments broke out during the discussions, which quickly escalated into physical violence between the two parties.

Sudden outbreak of violence

At one point during the exchange, members from both sides allegedly armed themselves with traditional weapons and attacked each other. The situation deteriorated within minutes, with the meeting ground turning into a violent battleground. At least 30 people sustained injuries of varying severity in the ensuing clashes.

Among the injured, Mohammad Ali suffered critical wounds. He was initially treated locally before being transferred to a private hospital in Dhaka as his condition worsened. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment.

Several of the injured victims were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. Medical sources indicated that a number of them remain in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could potentially rise.

Police response and investigation

Officer-in-Charge of Madhabpur Police Station, Md Sohel Rana, confirmed that law enforcement was deployed immediately after the incident to bring the situation under control.

“Additional police personnel were sent to the area to stabilise the situation. It is currently under control,” he said.

He further stated that no formal case had yet been filed, but legal proceedings would follow once the situation stabilises and responsible individuals are identified.

Rising concerns over mediation violence

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with informal arbitration meetings in rural areas, which are traditionally used in Bangladesh to resolve local disputes without going to court. While such salish systems often help settle minor conflicts, experts note that deeply rooted land disputes can sometimes escalate into violence when mediation fails.

In Bulla village, the death of Mohammad Ali has left residents shocked, with community leaders calling for stronger enforcement measures and formal legal intervention in complex property disputes to prevent further tragedies.
