Death of Woman at Rajshahi Hospital from Unknown Illness

A middle-aged woman has died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), commonly known as Ramek, after being treated for an unidentified illness, raising concern among her family and prompting a formal investigation by national health authorities. The patient passed away on Wednesday, 28 January, after nearly two weeks of treatment at the government-run tertiary hospital. She had been admitted on 14 January following a deterioration in her physical condition.

Hospital officials confirmed that the precise cause of death has not yet been determined. As a result, the woman’s relatives remain in distress, saying they have received no clear explanation about the illness that led to her death. The patient was a resident of Naogaon district and had reportedly been suffering from a range of severe symptoms prior to and during her hospitalisation.

According to hospital sources, the woman presented with persistent fever, intense headaches, repeated vomiting and episodes of convulsions. These symptoms, clinicians noted, are consistent with several serious infectious and neurological conditions. Some of the clinical features also resemble those associated with Nipah virus infection, a rare but highly dangerous zoonotic disease that has previously caused sporadic outbreaks in Bangladesh. However, doctors have stressed that no conclusion can be drawn solely on the basis of symptoms.

The death was formally confirmed by the hospital’s director, Brigadier General PKM Masud-ul-Islam, who stated that the case is being treated with due seriousness. He explained that samples from the patient had already been collected and sent for laboratory analysis by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), the country’s principal public health body responsible for disease surveillance and outbreak investigations.

“The IEDCR has collected the necessary samples from the patient,” Brigadier General Masud-ul-Islam said. “Until the test results are available, it would be premature to identify the disease or speculate on the cause of death.”

Health experts point out that winter months often see an increase in febrile illnesses accompanied by neurological complications, making diagnosis particularly challenging without laboratory confirmation. In such cases, authorities typically prioritise precautionary surveillance to rule out highly infectious diseases that could pose a broader public health risk.

Hospital officials also said that standard infection prevention and control measures were followed during the patient’s treatment. At present, no additional cases with similar symptoms have been officially reported at the hospital, and there has been no declaration of an outbreak.

A brief overview of the case is presented in the table below for clarity:
