At least nine people have died after a recreational boat capsized and sank in the Narmada River near Jabalpur in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, triggering a major rescue operation and renewed concerns over inland water transport safety.
According to local authorities, the accident occurred on Thursday when a leisure boat carrying an estimated 35 to 40 passengers was travelling along the river. Officials said the vessel had reached the middle of the river when weather conditions deteriorated rapidly. Strong winds and rough waters reportedly caused the boat to lose balance, tilt to one side and eventually sink.
Emergency teams, police officers and local rescue workers were deployed shortly after the incident was reported. Rescue operations continued into the night, with authorities using searchlights, boats and divers to locate missing passengers. Despite darkness and difficult river conditions, officials said the search was not suspended.
One of the most widely discussed aspects of the tragedy was the recovery of the bodies of a woman and her four-year-old child. Witnesses and rescuers reported that the mother was found clutching her son tightly inside her life jacket, suggesting she had tried to protect him until the final moments before the vessel went under.

Meanwhile, Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and announced government assistance for those affected. He also ordered an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Questions have since emerged regarding the boat’s safety measures. Several passengers reportedly alleged that the vessel lacked sufficient life jackets and may have been carrying passengers close to or beyond its intended capacity. Authorities have indicated that they will review the operator’s licence, compliance with safety regulations and passenger management procedures.
Waterway tourism has grown steadily across several Indian states, including Madhya Pradesh, where river cruises and leisure boating have become increasingly popular. However, safety experts have repeatedly warned that poor enforcement of regulations, overcrowding and failure to monitor weather forecasts continue to pose serious risks.
